Worked example: 150 LF wood privacy, fully itemized
Computed by the calculator above · wood standard tier @ $20.00/LF materials · 6 ft · pro install · 1 walk gate · October 2026 prices
| Line item | Math | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Linear feet | 2 × (40 + 35) | 150 LF |
| Fence materials | 150 × $20.00 | $3,000.00 |
| Install labor | 150 × $11.00 (level ground) | $1,650.00 |
| Walk gate | 1 × $250 | $250.00 |
| Permit | flat | $75.00 |
| Total — pro install | $4,975.00 | |
| Total — DIY | materials + gate + permit | $3,325.00 |
| Scenario | Total | Typical range (±25%) |
|---|---|---|
| DIY | $3,325 | $2,494 – $4,156 |
| Hire a pro | $4,975 | $3,731 – $6,219 |
Run the calculator above with these inputs and you'll get the same numbers. At $31.00/LF installed all-in (with gate), this lands inside the 2026 national wood-privacy range of $18–$45/LF — the model checks out against published data.
Fence costs by region: same job, different labor market
Materials cost roughly the same everywhere — labor doesn't. This table takes the worked example above (150 linear feet on level ground) and scales only the labor portion by each region's labor multiplier, exactly as the calculator's ZIP adjustment does. Materials, gate and permit ($3,325) stay fixed.
| Region | Labor multiplier | Labor cost | Total (pro install) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northeast | ×1.18 | $1,947 | $5,272 |
| Midwest | ×1.01 | $1,666 | $4,992 |
| South | ×0.89 | $1,468 | $4,794 |
| West | ×1.05 | $1,732 | $5,058 |
Regional multipliers are the mean of this site's state labor multipliers (BLS OEWS May 2023, construction laborers — the same data behind the ZIP adjustment). The Northeast–South gap on this job is $478, all labor. Enter your ZIP in the calculator for your metro's exact multiplier.
What's included — and what isn't
✓ Included in every estimate
- Fence materials per linear foot: panels/pickets or fabric, posts, concrete, hardware
- Pro install labor per linear foot, when you select "Hire a pro"
- Height adjustment (4 ft ≈ −15%, 8 ft ≈ +30% vs. 6-ft baseline)
- Terrain adder on labor for sloped or rocky ground, when selected
- Walk and driveway gates, at your count and price
- Old-fence removal, when you toggle it on
- Permit & fees, when you enter an amount
✗ Not included
- Property survey ($200–$1,200 if your line is uncertain — get one before you build)
- Land clearing, tree/root removal, or major grading
- Gate automation / openers ($500–$5,000+)
- Staining or sealing a wood fence after install (budget $300–$700 per 150 ft every 2–3 years)
- Retaining walls or drainage work under the fence line
If a contractor's bid covers items on the right-hand list and ours doesn't, ask them to itemize — that's exactly how you compare bids honestly.

| Aluminum ornamental | $25–$40 | $12–$20 | Bhumi Calculator 2026 |
| Composite privacy | $30–$50 | $14–$22 | HowMuchFence 2026 (labor range — industry estimate) |
| Old-fence removal | $3–$10 / LF (default $5.00 — industry estimate) | Livingetc / Angie Hicks | |
| Walk gate (3–4 ft) | $150–$400 installed (default $250) | HowMuchFence 2026 | |
| Driveway / double gate | $400–$1,500 installed (default $800) | HowMuchFence 2026 | |
| Permit | $20–$400 by municipality (default $75) | Angie Hicks via Livingetc | |
Ranges move by store, region, and product line — every default above is editable in the calculator. Height multipliers (4 ft −15%, 8 ft +30%) and terrain adders (slope +15%, rocky +35% on labor) are industry rules of thumb, labeled as estimates. Full sourcing and update policy: methodology.
Three ways people get the math wrong
- Forgetting gates. A $28/LF quote × 150 LF = $4,200 — then the walk gate ($250) and permit ($75) push it past $4,500. Gates need heavier posts and hardware; per-foot math alone always comes in low.
- Comparing material price without install. Chain-link at $10/LF sounds half the price of wood at $20 — but installed it's $17 vs. $31/LF, and the privacy difference is the whole point. Always compare installed cost per linear foot.
- Ignoring the ground. A slope that forces stepped panels or rocky soil that needs an auger can add 15–35% to labor. Flat-yard quotes don't survive contact with a hillside — toggle your terrain above.
Fence cost FAQs
How much does a fence cost per linear foot in 2026?
Installed at 6 ft: chain-link $13–$25, wood privacy $18–$45, vinyl $30–$55, aluminum $37–$60, composite roughly $44–$72 per linear foot — before gates, removal, permits, and terrain. Punch your numbers into the calculator above for your material and yard.
How many linear feet of fence do I need?
Rectangular yard: 2 × (length + width). A 40×35 ft backyard = 150 LF. Irregular lots: walk each run with a measuring wheel and add them up, or enter LF directly in the calculator.
Is it cheaper to build a fence yourself?
Usually — labor is 30–50% of a pro job. Wood privacy and chain-link are the most DIY-friendly; most DIYers report 2–4 weekends for 150 LF with a helper and a rented auger. Vinyl and aluminum need precise post spacing, which is where DIY most often goes wrong. Toggle DIY/pro in the calculator to see both numbers.
Do I need a permit to build a fence?
Most cities require one — typically $20–$400, though some waive it for fences under 6 ft. Check your municipality before you dig, and call 811 for a free utility locate. Fence companies pull permits routinely; DIYers forget this step most.
How accurate is this calculator?
It's a budgeting estimate built on October 2026 installed-price ranges and installer labor data — good for budgeting and sanity-checking bids. Every result shows a ±25% planning range because soil, slope, and regional labor move real quotes. See how we compute costs for the full method and limitations.
